Three police officers in the northern province of Ha Giang have been suspended in connection with the death of a local man in custody last month.
Previously Nguyen The Nghiep, former second lieutenant of Tan Yen District's police, was arrested for allegedly beating Nguyen Van Khuong, 21, to death on July 23.
Khuong was travelling with his girlfriend on motorbike when he was stopped by traffic police in Tan Yen District for not wearing a helmet.
Police took Khuong and the bike into custody, alledgely because Khuong had refused to sign a violation report.
At the station, Nghiep, 25, took Khuong to a room for a moment. After the officer left the room, the young man was found dead.
Duong Ngoc Sau, vice director of Bac Giang police, quoted the results of an autopsy report by the Ministry of Public Security's Criminal Sciences Institute as saying that Khuong died from blunt force trauma to the brain.
The trauma, Sau said, had been caused by a stick.
During Khuong's funeral procession on July 25, hundreds of mourners carried his coffin to the Bac Giang People's Committee headquarters to demand an investigation.
