A fierce house fire in southern Vietnam has killed six people in a family, including two children.
The blaze ripped through the house at midnight when the victims were asleep. Only one woman survived.
The fire started at around 12.15 a.m. Sunday in Ca Mau town. A neighbor, Nguyen Quoc De, said he and some other people rushed to the house, banging the door and calling the family.
They managed to break down the door, but could only save Tran Thi Le, 70, who was sleeping in a room on the ground floor.
Le said she had not been aware of the fire until she heard neighbors banging on her door. "Smoke was everywhere," Le said.
However, six other people sleeping in rooms on the wooden mezzanine could not escape the blaze.
The neighbors tried to use water to put out the fire, but "the blaze was so fierce no one could help," said Vo Thanh Tong, who lives next door.
After local firefighters came and put out the fire, they found the six victims, including Tran Quang Tien and his wife Tran Kim Anh, both 59, their daughter Tran Kim Hang, 28, and son Tran Quang Toan, 22, their granddaughter Tran Thanh Vi, 8, and Hang's son Quach Gia Hy, 4.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
