Three dead as truck crash levels Vietnam Navy guard station

Three people died and one was severely injured when a dump truck crashed into a guard station of the Navy barracks in the central city of Da Nang on Thursday.

The truck driver, Luong Huy Hoang, 29, turned himself into police after the crask, which took place at around 10 a.m.

Eyewitnesses said Hoang's speeding truck had passed a roundabout and suddenly crashed into the sidewalk before plunging into the guard station of the the local navy regiment's barracks at the Yet Kieu-Nguyen Phan Vinh junction in Son Tra District.

The crash leveled the station and destroyed a 50-square-meter office inside the barracks.

Four people, including Tran Anh Tuan, a 19-year-old soldier who was in charge of guarding the station, and three workers who were working at a construction site inside the barracks, were buried under the wreckage.

Police and rescuers pulled the four victims out of the rubble. The three workers - Mai Dang Nam, Nguyen Van Phuc and Nguyen Van Vu - had already died while Tuan was seriously injured.

Police are investigating the incident's cause.
