Three children drowned Saturday when bathing in a pond in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang, local online newspaper VnExpress said.
On Saturday afternoon, Truong Thanh Tra, 10, invited three friends, nine-year-old Ly Dai, 12-year-old Truong Quoc Hung, and 13-year-old Nguyen Khanh Vi, to bathe in a pond near the paddy field belonging to Tra's family in Soc Trang Town.
When Dai, Hung, and Vi fell into the part of the pond that was too deep, Tra got out of the pond and called out to people for help.
A group of women who were transplanting rice seedlings near the site immediately ran into neighboring houses looking for rescuers as they could not swim.
A young man jumped into the pond to save them, but the effort came too late.
