The Ho Chi Minh City police have arrested three men for allegedly possessing and selling illegal weaponry, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Wednesday.

Investigators tracked down Tran Duy Vien, 19, a college student who had posted online advertisements for weapons such as clubs, electric batons and switchblade knives.

They apprehended Vien at a coffee shop in District 5 on Monday afternoon, confiscating three electric batons and one club he apparently had planned to sell.

He confessed to police that due to difficult family circumstances, he decided to buy weapons from Ton The Vinh, 21, and resell them, earning a difference of some VND200,000 (US$9.6) apiece, after he became aware of the popularity of trading illegal weapons online.

Police later that day captured Vinh and seized from him two electric batons and three clubs while he was delivering them to a location on Su Van Hanh Street in District 5.

Vinh told police he had bought the weapons from a District 1 shop that trades used items and that he had managed to resell about 60 of them since February of 2012.

Upon Vinh's confession, authorities seized more than 20 weapons from Nguyen Thanh Tam, 47, who claimed to have purchased them from various people at Dan Sinh Market in District 1.
