Thieves killed a gold merchant couple and their daughter
more than 1,000 grams of gold in the northern province of Bac Giang Wednesday.
Neighbors found Trinh Thanh Ngoc and Dinh Thi Chin the owners of Bich Ngoc Gold Store and their one-year-old daughter in a pool of blood at their house that doubled as the shop. The three had been stabbed to death.
Trinh Thi Bich, the couple's nine-year-old daughter, was found lying unconscious with her right arm chopped off.
At around 9 a.m., the neighbors did not see the couple open their gold shop in the morning as usual and they knocked on the door but no one answered.
Later, relatives of the couple received a phone call from Bich saying briefly that her parents were robbed. Bich quickly hung up, and there was no answer when the relatives tried to call back.
The neighbors and the relatives called police, who broke the door to get into the house.
They saw blood everywhere and all the gold in the shop, estimated at 1,125 grams in total, had been robbed.
The body of Ngoc the 37-year-old husband was found on the stairs of the second floor. He was face down with multiple stab wounds on his body, including a deep cut into the nape of his neck.
The body of Chin the 35-year-old wife was found in a room on the third floor with two stab wounds to her belly and neck.
Trinh Phuong Thao, the one-year-old daughter, was found dead in the bedroom on the second floor with a deep cut on her neck.
Bich had multiple stab wounds to her body. She was rushed to the hospital to get her severed arm rejoined. She is now in stable condition, police said.
Ngoc and Chin have run the gold shop for two years after returning from South Korea as guest workers, according to their neighbors.
They said the couple also served as lenders.
The Bich Ngoc Gold Shop is located in a crowded residential area near National Highway 31.
According to police, the thieve(s) may have entered the house through the window on the third floor. They may have been caught and they decided to kill all family members, police said.
Initial investigations showed the alarm on the first floor and the electricity to the house had been cut.
In related news, on Tuesday, police in the southern province of Binh Duong arrested Chuong Cao Khoan, a 30-year-old man who killed Nguyen Thi Nhu Quynh, a 12-year-old girl, to rob her gold jewelery.
According to the police, the murder happened three days earlier. Quynh's mother, Khoan's neighbor, reportedly left Quynh in Khoan's care when she went to a ceremony with Khoan's wife.
According to police reports, Khoan drove a motorbike with Quynh on the back seat, saying he would drive the girl to an orchard to pick longans.
He later rode the bike to a desolate cassava garden, and suddenly cut Quynh with a saw, police said.
Quynh died with 11 cuts to her neck and shoulder.
Khoan took away seven bracelets, two rings and a pair of earrings, all made of gold, from the dead body.
He later sold the bracelets for more than VND4.6 million ($220), according to police. When he got back home, he "joined" the search for Quynh along with her family.
Her family found the dead body the following morning. Police interrogated Khoan and later found an earring in his pocket, investigators said.
