Police in Ho Chi Minh City have arrested two young men for robbing a Singaporean tourist on the street.

Phan Van Tho, 24, and Nguyen Van Minh Trung, 19, grabbed a bag from Lim Lian Ui, then walking in District 5, and fled on their motorbike.

They were chased after by a group of police officers who had been following the two for several minutes after noticing that they were acting suspicious.

It took the police five minutes to catch the robbers, who threw the bag into the street to create a distraction after taking all the valuables.

The police returned Lim his belongings including an iPad, an iPhone and VND1 million (US$48).

Given regular robberies and scams against tourists in the country's largest cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, authorities in the capital city earlier this month proposed establishing a special police force charged with maintaining tourist security.

But business insiders said such a plan would be wasteful as maintaining tourist security is a task for the regular police force.
