Hanoi police on Tuesday arrested a man who killed the security guard of a transaction office of the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) in an attempt to rob money.
Nguyen Ba Quynh, 28, was nabbed while hiding in a motel in Phu Xuyen District, not far from Thanh Oai District where he committed the crime.
According to the police, At around 9:30 p.m. on November 11, Quynh snuck into the Agribank's branch office in Thanh Oai District with a knife and a butane torch, according to police.
He waited in two hours until Nguyen Tien Van, the 48-year-old security guard, fell asleep in the guarding room.
Quynh then killed Van with 10 stabs and used the butane torch to cut open the roller door of the transaction office.
He cut open two money boxes inside the office with the butane torch but found no money, so he took away Van's mobile phone and motorbike before fleeing the scene.
Police found the motorbike in a nearby district shortly after, which led to Quynh's arrest.
Quynh used to be convicted for robbery and injuring people, police said. They are still investigating to determine whether he had accomplices.
