Thief drowns in canal as fleeing chasers in southern Vietnam

A laptop thief in Ho Chi Minh City downtown jumped into a canal to escape a chasing crowd Monday night, only to drown himself.
The police recovered the man’s body from the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal but have not identified him yet as he had no personal papers with him.
Initial investigation found that the man sneaked into a hotel on Nguyen Binh Khiem Street in District 1 at around 7 p.m. that night to steal a laptop from the reception desk.
Staffs of the hotel caught the act and chased after him.

He withdrew at a dagger to scare them off.
But the staffs asked many locals to join and the man had to run.
He took off his shirt, sneakers and belt before jumping, eyewitnesses said.
But he drowned in the middle of the canal section, they said.
Police arrived at the canal at around 8:30 p.m. and found the body an hour later.
The fate of the laptop is not clear.
