Police in Son La Province Tuesday arrested a suspected thief after he allegedly shot a police officer while trying to flee.
Around 100 officers spent more than a day looking for Ha Thanh Binh, 26, before they found him hiding on a hill, armed with a gun, and arrested him.
His accomplice Tran Thanh Tung, 25, had been arrested earlier.
Preliminary investigation found that the two had broken into a local house and stole money and assets worth around VND25 million, or more than US$1,000.
Several officers spotted them on the street soon afterwards and wanted to check them, but Binh withdrew a pistol and fired two shots at an officer before running up the hill. One bullet hit the officer’s thigh, but he is not in danger.
