A former traffic police officer who received VND5 million (US$240) from a truck driver carrying illegal products has been arrested on bribery charges.

Lieutenant Nguyen Thanh Hai, 26, of Thanh Hoa Province's Traffic Police Department will be detained for four months for further investigations into his actions.

On July 31, Hai stopped the truck carrying protected timber on a National Highway 1A section in Thanh Hoa.

He asked the truck driver to pay him VND5 million, threatening that the truck would be taken to a forest management station if the bribe was not paid.

The driver did not bring enough money and Hai allowed him to pawn his driving license and truck registration certificate.
