Thai police on Saturday arrested a Vietnamese woman who swallowed 44 packets of crystal methamphetamine in an alleged attempt to smuggle the drugs out of Thailand, the Bangkok Post reported.
Tran Thi Thuy Ngan, 30, was about to board a Thai Lion Air flight to Jakarta when she was detained by customs officers, who found her “suspicious,” at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok.
The officers X-rayed her and results found many small packets in her stomach, the report said.
She was later forced to excrete what she had swallowed and the officers found 44 packets of methamphetamine weighing 416 grams, according to the report.
Ngan reportedly confessed to Thai police she was hired by a Vietnamese friend, who got married to an African man, to smuggle the drug out of Thailand to Indonesia for 30,000 baht (US$915).
Her friend told her to fly to Thailand a week before the arrest, she said.
Ngan also admitted to having successfully smuggled drugs out of Thailand three times.
On Sunday, she was taken to a press conference at the customs office of Suvarnabhumi Airport, the other international airport serving Bangkok.
Paisarn Chuanjit, deputy director-general of Thailand’s Customs Department, said the narcotics bureau had previously received a tip-off that a transnational drug gang would use an airport in Thailand as a transfer point to deliver drugs to another unknown country in Asia.
