Two alleged dog thieves, both teenagers, drowned after jumping into a river to escape from an angry mob in the northern province of Thanh Hoa.

The body of Le Van Thanh, 17, of Yen Dinh District was found at around 6:30 a.m. on July 17 by locals after it drifted ashore on the Ma River.

Shortly afterwards, the body of Ngo Van Ngoc, 19, of the same district, was recovered some 15 kilometers away.

According to the police, Thanh and Ngoc drowned after jumping into the river on July 15 when they were chased by a group of residents in a village in Vinh Loc District.

At around 1 p.m. that day, some locals spotted Ngoc and Thanh stealing a dog from a local house and fleeing on a motorbike with no number plate, police said.

The villagers ran out of their houses to chase after the thieves, who drove toward the river.

Surrounded by angry villagers, the two dropped the motorbike on the banks and jumped into the water.

They reportedly drowned after swimming halfway to the other side.

Authorities and families searched for the youngsters in vain.

Police said they are continuing investigations into the case.
