A suspect in a failed ride-by snatching attempt targeting foreigners in Ho Chi Minh City's District 3 has been detained, police said.
Ironically, Tran Quoc Quy, 15, was arrested when he showed up at the police station to claim the motorbike he had left at the crime scene.
According to a police report, on Jul. 19 evening, while riding a motorbike on Dien Bien Phu St., Dist. 3., Quy and an accomplice attempted to snatch a mobile phone of two Russian tourists, Dmitry and Zhukov.
The Russian men, however, managed to grab their motorbike, forcing the two snatchers to flee on foot. The victims then brought the bike to a local police station.
Soon later, Quy came to the police station and asked to have his motorbike back.
He claimed that he had been caught in a traffic collision and was so scared that he had to run away, leaving the vehicle behind.
However, the tourists and some witnesses of the robbery realized Quy and he was arrested immediately.
The police said they are now looking for Quy's accomplice, who is identified as Trinh Quang Huy, 17.
