Police in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre arrested Sunday a teenager and her boyfriend for allegedly killing her mother to steal her gold necklace, newswire Dan Tri reported.

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, 18, and Dang Van Ut, 30, both drug addicts, according to the police, will be held in custody for four months.

The police said they killed Trinh Thi Cuong, Ngan's mother, 43, on the evening of August 14 and took her necklace.

Cuong was alone at home since Ngan's younger sister,Trinh Tuyet Van, was over at a neighbor's place for the night.

The following morning, when Van returned home, she found Cuong dead, gagged with a piece of cloth and her arms and legs tied. The gold necklace she wore was missing.

The police said Cuong may have been strangled to death.

Van said Ngan had been naughty since she was a child. Recently she had argued with Cuong and left for Ho Chi Minh City, where she worked as a waitress at a coffee shop.

She had a relationship with Ut, and the two often returned to ask Cuong for money.

Van said Ngan had confessed to being pregnant and asked Cuong for money a few days before the murder, but Cuong told her she had no money.

When the police checked Cuong's mobile phone, they saw a text message from Ngan saying, "I'm sorry mom, do not tell the police. I will pay you back later."

The police surmise that Ngan may have thought that her mother was alive when she and her boyfriend left.

After searching for several days, the police found Ut and Ngan in a hired apartment in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
