The Ho Chi Minh City police said Wednesday they have arrested a teenager who posed as a police officer and tried to extort money from a British tourist.

According to police, on the night of October 18 Dang Tuan Thanh, 17, of Tay Ninh Province made the acquaintance of Harry Chafer Cook, 23, on Bui Vien Street and invited him to a nearby park to smoke marijuana.

After Cook smoked the drug he gave him, Thanh said he was in fact a police officer and Cook would have to come to the police station for illegally using drugs.

He asked Cook for VND8 million (US$384), a laptop, and a mobile phone to let him off.

The Englishman promised to return to the park the next day to give Thanh the money, but reported to the police.

The next morning Thanh was arrested by the Pham Ngu Lao Ward police when he came to the park to collect the money.

He will be charged with "attempted extortion."
