A man was rushed to hospital after being stabbed in the neck in a brawl  that broke out at Huong Tich Pagoda in Ha Tinh Province Wednesday

Police in the north central province of Ha Tinh Thursday arrested a young man for allegedly killing another in a brawl that broke out at a spring festival in a local pagoda the previous day.

Ho Van Ha, 18, of Ha Tinh's neighboring Nghe An Province admitted to his crime, they said.

The fight occurred at around 2:30 p.m. when thousands of visitors were watching the opening of the festival at the Huong Tich Pagoda on Hong Linh Mountain in Can Loc District.

According to witnesses, two groups of 10 youths each began to fight and attacked each other with weapons.

During the pitched battle, Ha stabbed Dinh Xuan Hung, 19, also of Nghe An, in the neck with a sharp knife used to peel fruits.

Hung collapsed with blood all over him.

Ha also tried to stab Nguyen Dac Quan, 19, who was in Hung's group, in the chest, but he escaped with minor injuries.

The crowds were terrified and fled helter skelter towards the cable cars that would take them out of there.

Hung was rushed to a hospital but he was declared dead on arrival.

The two groups fled the scene, but four of them were arrested by the pagoda’s guards and police officers.

Ha was among those who escaped but was arrested shortly afterwards.

The police found the knife Ha used to stab Hung in a forest 50 meters away from the pagoda.

Ha told them that the two groups had previous enmity, which spiraled into a conflict at the pagoda.

The police said they released all the others since they were not involved in the killing.

In Vietnam, the first month of the Lunar New Year sees lots of festivals at pagodas.
