Two 13- and 14-year-old boys in Thai Nguyen Province were in custody Friday after allegedly killing a 76-year-old woman and using her money to pay for their online game addiction, a local newspaper reported.
Tran Van Duc, 13, and Tran Van Son, 14, of Tuc Tranh Commune in the province’s Phu Luong District were under investigation for the death of Hoang Thi Nuoi, Thai Nguyen newspaper quoted local police as saying.
Nuoi's neighbors found her corpse in her home at around 9.30 a.m. on Friday.
When interrogated by police, Duc and Son confessed that they had broken into her house on July 2 evening, when she wasn't at home, in an attempt to steal money to fund their game binges.
However, when Nuoi unexpectedly returned home, Son hit her with a wooden stick and stabbed her in the abdomen, chest and head with a pair of scissors he was taking along.
They then stole her VND4 million (US$188) and fled.
In May, the Ministry of Information and Communications has instructed relevant agencies to resume granting licenses for online games after suspending them in 2010 amid wide public outcry over their harmful effects.
According to the ministry, if Vietnam does not issue a license for local game companies, people can still play games provided by companies abroad, cutting Vietnam out of the revenue flow.
