A teenager suspected of murdering a 9-year-old boy in Vietnam told police he did so because the boy saw him stealing a mobile phone.
Vu Anh Tu, 14, was arrested on Dec. 2, two days after the body of Vu Duc Dat was found in a well by Dat's house with multiple slash wounds in his head.
At a press briefing Wednesday, Colonel Nguyen Trung Hieu, spokesperson of Thanh Hoa Police Department, said Anh Tu, who is in police custody, had confessed to killing Dat.
According to the police, Anh Tu said he came to Dat's house on Nov. 29 with an intent to steal money. He carried a hammer.
Seeing Dat alone in the house, Anh Tu forced the boy to show him the family's chest, but he couldn't find anything valuable in it.
He then stole a mobile phone of Dat's mother, and picked up a knife in the kitchen.
He forced Dat to undress and jump into the well with 3.5 meter deep water. Anh Tu told interrogators he thought of staging an accident by drowning Dat.
When Dat resisted, Anh Tu tied his legs with a rope and threw Dat into the well. Dat tried to climbed back, but Anh Tu slashed him in the head and threw things at him until he fell and died in the well.
After the murder, Tu returned home to change clothes and went to a tutor class as usual.
Dat’s parent found his body after going back from work and looked for their son around the house, according to investigators.
Several neighbors said Tu was a spoiled boy who got addicted to online games and involved in many petty thefts.
