A teenager in north central Vietnam had been hiding her pregnancy until she had contractions in class on Sunday and gave birth soon later at a hospital.
The 12th grade mother, identified as Chu Thi D., was sent to a general hospital in Nghe An Province 15 minutes after she screamed out during class.
Teachers and her classmates at Dien Chau 2 High School thought she had some kinds of stomach pain but doctors found out her water had broken and urgently sent her to the delivery room, where a boy was born.
The school principal Hoang Manh Nhan said: "I was really surprised as before D. was hospitalized, no one at the school knew she was pregnant. Maybe D. had tightened her belly so that no one could find out."
Local authorities said the baby has been adopted by a local sterile couple.
D's mother had left her father many years ago and is working abroad.
Vietnamese psychologists have called for introduction of sex education at secondary school levels. They say attitudes to sex have changed among the youth, mainly because of early physical and psychological development, and the influence of foreign cultures and modern lifestyles.
Of 7,548 teenagers interviewed from 42 provinces and cities in a 2007 survey, 7.6 percent said they already had sex.
