Three teen boys have been arrested in Thai Binh Province for robbing and killing an old woman for money to play online games.

Police said the boys broke into the house of the 76-year-old woman Sunday night, beating her to death on the spot.

Vu Xuan Hung, Tran Ich Hien and Trieu Quang Son ran away to Dien Bien Province neighboring China with money and gold they had taken from the woman, who lived alone and sold beetle and areca nuts, a traditional snack for old Vietnamese women.

But they were arrested early the next morning, after a friend of the trio told police that the group had asked him to go with them.

The boys told the police they needed money to pay debts acquired playing games at internet shops. They said they took in VND8 million, including the gold, from the robbery.

Hung, 15, and Son, 16, have been detained pending criminal charges, while Hien has been sent to a rehabilitation center as he was under 14 years old.

Many game addicts in Vietnam have recently turned to murder and robbery to feed their habits.

A 16-year-old boy in the Mekong Delta is facing murder charges after killing a woman in late February to take money for games, while a court in central Vietnam on February 29 upheld a 10-year jail term handed down to another 16-year-old boy for killing a 7-year-old girl while robbing her jewelery to pay gaming debts.
