Police in the southern province of Dong Nai arrested Tuesday a teenager who fatally stabbed a railway crossing guard to rob a motorbike helmet last month, the Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
Nguyen Hoang Nam, 16, was arrested along with his friends, Pham Hoang Tri, 18, and Nguyen Dac Trung, 16.
On August 31, Tri drove a motorbike with Nam on the back seat. Tri was wearing a helmet while Nam was not.
When the pair went past the railway crossing guard station on the Ghenh Bridge in Bien Hoa City at around 2:15 a.m., Nam told Tri to stop so he could steal a helmet which was hung up on a motorbike in front of the station.
When Nam was grabbing the helmet from the bike, Ho Dac Doan, the 54-year-old guard who was talking with his co-workers inside the station, spotted him.
He rushed out of the station to seize his helmet from Nam, whereupon the latter pulled out a knife and stabbed Doan in the chest.
He jumped on Tri's motorbike and fled the scene, but later.told his friend Trung about the murder without remorse, according to police.
Trung has been arrested for covering up Nam's crime, police said.
Doan succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
