A court in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday sentenced a Vinasun taxi driver to 18 years' imprisonment for killing a motorbike taxi driver in a fight over parking space in front of a local zoo last August.
According to the indictment, Nguyen Hong Vinh, 39, parked his taxi at the front gate of the Saigon Zoo awaiting guests on August 6, when he had a quarrel with Tran Ngoc Loi, 53.
Loi, a motorbike taxi driver, asked Vinh to park the car away from his motorbike, saying that the taxi had blocked the motorbike’s exit.
During the wrangle, Vinh attacked Loi with a wheel spanner and seriously injured him, witnesses said. Loi was rushed to a nearby hospital, but died later on.
After Vinh's arrest, his taxi company Vinasun gave Loi's family VND100 million (US$4,450) as compensation.
It said Vinh would be responsible to pay back the money to the company.
