Ho Chi Minh City police caught a local tax official receiving VND30 million (US$1,400) from a businesswoman on Friday after allegedly soliciting the bribe.
Initial reports from police said that Huynh Trung Hieu, an inspector with District 1's tax agency, asked the director of an entertainment company to pay him money so he and his colleagues would turn a blind eye on its tax violations.
Hieu first demanded VND50 million ($2,300) on Wednesday after he and his colleagues came to the company and check its records.
Two days later he agreed to reduce it to VND30 million and asked the director, who was referred to as N.T.H.P, to pay him within the day.
Following P.'s tip-off, police raided a café near the tax agency's headquarters and caught Hieu red-handed.
Police said Hieu had been assigned to the agency's inspectorate since last year.
Police are investigating the case further.
