A tanker truck carrying molasses exploded on Friday, killing one person and critically injuring another in the central province Quang Ngai.

In the early morning a tanker of Ho Chi Minh City-based Kim Ha Viet Company was transferring syrup to another tanker of the same company within the precinct of Quang Ngai Sugar Joint-stock Company.

The tanker that received the molasses exploded, sending 20-year-old Nguyen Tan Cuong, who was checking the process on the top of the tanker, up about 20 meters.

Cuong died on the spot, while his assistant driver Phuong was critically injured.

Broken pieces from the tanker were projected nearly 30 meters, breaking glass windows of nearby houses.

Quang Ngai's related agencies are investigating the cause of the explosion.
