Police in Ho Chi Minh City said on Friday they had arrested three men for allegedly causing an explosion near a local police station a day earlier.

According to police, investigators found a shotgun, a scimitar and explosive materials in a car used by Dang Quang Vuong, 29, Dang Ngoc Quang, 32, and Nguyen Huu Phuoc, 42.

The trio were accused of stopping their car near a Cu Chi District police station before the explosion on Thursday afternoon.

They fled after the explosion. However, no casualties were reported.

A cylindrical container was also confiscated at the site, police said, adding that it could be an explosives cartridge.

An article on VnExpress said the suspects told police that they were drunk when they drove the car on a crowded road in front the police station that day, so they threw a firecracker at the crowd to clear the road.

Police are investigating the trio on charges of causing public disorder, according to the news website.
