One of eight men and boys suspected of raping two girls in the central province Phu Yen hung himself in his jail cell, a local official said Friday.
According to Nguyen Nhat Tam, vice director of the Phu Yen police department, guards at the Dong Hoa District detention center found Le Van Tran, 26, hanging from the waistband from his prison uniform at 11pm.
Local agencies conducted an autopsy and other examinations at the site for investigations on Friday, Tam said.
On Thursday, Tran and seven other men and boys were arrested on suspicion of raping two girls -- a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old -- at a Hoa Hiep Commune beach two days before.
Police said that when the girls returned to the beach after bathing, the men hid their bags, forcing them to go for drinking.
At around 8 p.m. that day when girls were drunk, the men, who are between 15 and 26 years old, took turns raping them.
Investigations into the case are still underway.
