A woman was killed and two others injured when police officers from the Drug Crime Department opened fire on their car Wednesday. Investigators said the three suspects were alleged drug dealers trying to attack police.
Le Minh Hue, 25, was shot dead. Two others -- Pham Van Dong, 40, and Hue's husband Do Huy Hoang, 36 -- were injured during the altercation in the northern province of Hoa Binh.
Dang Viet Dung, 31, and Nguyen Cong Thu, 41, were arrested without being injured by the gunfire.
Police also seized about 10 kilograms of heroin, 1,000 methamphetamine tablets and one kilogram of crystal ice, investigators said.
The suspects were carrying the drugs in two cars in Hoa Binh Province's Cao Phong District when they were detected by police, Vietnam News Agency reported. It was unclear how police tracked down the ring.
The two cars had crashed into three police cars on the run before one of the two cars crashed into a roadside field.
The five people in the car refused to surrender and the police shot at them while they were preparing for an attack, according to investigators.
Under the Penal Code, those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
The production or sale of 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics is also punishable by death.
