Inspectors from the Ministry of Public Security Friday took a university student into custody for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 16 kilograms of rhino horns into Vietnam by air.
Ha Nhan Chinh, 23, was caught carrying nine African rhino horns weighing 16.26 kilograms in his suitcase upon arriving at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on a flight from Qatar on January 6.
The horns, wrapped in silver paper, were not declared by Chinh with local customs agents, inspectors said.
Chinh claimed that he flew to Mozambique to survey the wood market on January 1, but later was asked by somebody else to transport the horns into Vietnam.
Police are investigating further.
