Rescuers in the central province of Quang Ngai said Thursday that 32 fishermen of a local boat, which had sunk due to strong winds the day before, have all been saved.
The boat was 29 nautical miles from the Spratly Islands when a fierce whirlwind suddenly hit it at around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, throwing all of its crew into the sea.
A local search and rescue center received distress signal soon later and called another fishing boat near the area for help.
Bad weather and strong winds hampered the rescue mission. It took more than seven hours to find all of the 32 crew members.
Another military ship later reached the scene, taking care of the exhausted men, who had been staying in the sea for hours. Another fishing boat then carried them safely back to shore.
