A Can Tho court has sentenced a 38-year-old storekeeper to 18 years in prison for stealing more than 600 tons of sugar from his company to have money for gambling.
Doan Phuoc Minh was also ordered to compensate Can Tho Sugar Company more than VND8.2 billion (US$364,800).
At the trial on Thursday, Minh said he began to work for the company as a storekeeper in 2012.
He came up with the idea of stealing sugar to pay off VND300 million of gambling debt.
He managed to steal and sell more than 600 tons of sugar in two consignments for more than VND6.4 billion ($284,800).
Minh saved VND87 million to pay part of his debt and spent the rest on gambling in Cambodia's casinos.
Investigators found that Minh issued documents to have the two consignments dispatched to his buyer but did not record any sales.
The case was exposed in September last year when a manager inspected the store.
At the trial, Minh confessed that he gambled most of the money and lost it all.
