The deputy head and chief accountant of a Ho Chi Minh City district social insurer were detained Monday on charges of stealing nearly US$270,000 in insurance money, news website VnExpress reported.
Nguyen Thi Hoa, deputy director of Nha Be District Social Insurance Agency, and his accountant Do Phuong Anh, are now being investigated for embezzlement via document forgery.
Hoa and Anh were arrested as part of an investigation begun in March. The Ministry of Public Security had previously arrested Nguyen Anh Tuan and Bui Quoc Vinh, whose job was to receive insurance applications at the agency, as part of the same case.
Those two men were accused of forging fake documents and embezzlement.
Police say the officials have abused their power to appropriate the agency's insurance money since 2009, drafting more than 360 fake applications.
Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
