Somali pirates release Vietnam ship on $4.5-mln ransom

Somali pirates have released a Vietnamese-owned cargo ship and 24 Vietnamese crewmen after receiving US$4.5 million in ransom, according to Somalia Report.

The Mongolia-flagged ship MV Hoang Son Sun is currently making her way to Salalah, Oman, where she was expected to arrive in two-three days, the news agency reported Friday, adding that the crew is reported in good condition.

The 22,835-DWT bulk carrier, owned by the Vietnamese company Hoang Son Co. Ltd., was carrying 21,000 tons of iron ore when it was hijacked on January 17 some 520 nautical miles southeast of Muscat, Oman, it reported.

Previously the pirates demanded between $5-8 million, it added.
