Two thieves gave themselves up to police Monday after killing a man  who was trying to stop them from stealing his dog in southern Vietnam.

Le Huu Thien, 27, and Duong Duy Linh, 26, of the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang are being detained for investigations into the murder of Duong Van Thanh, 48.

A passer-by found Thanh lying on the roadside in front of his house in Chau Thanh District at around 5 a.m on Sunday.

Thanh told Bui Van My, the passer-by, that two men shot at him with a stun gun when Thanh was trying to stop them from stealing his dog.

Thanh collapsed and the men fled the scene with the dog, Thanh told My.

Thanh was then rushed to hospital but he succumbed to his injuries.

According to the VnExpress news website, Thanh suffered from a wound on his chest, probably stabbed by a sharp and pointed object.

Local residents found at the crime scene a spear usually used by the dog thieves for their home-made stun guns. It is around 40 centimeters long and connected with an electric wire.
