Police in central Vietnam found several bags containing wild animals, including live venomous snakes, on a passenger bus on Wednesday, news website VnExpress reported.
Authorities of Quang Ngai Province said some officers saw the suspicious looking bags when they boarded the bus to follow a criminal suspect.
Police later stopped the bus and found one bag containing seven venomous snakes, including cobras and king cobras, and others containing nine individuals of elongated tortoise, giant Asian pond turtle and the eastern black-bridged leaf turtle.
Huynh Phong, the owner of the bags, told police he was carrying the live animals from Ho Chi Minh City to a restaurant in Quang Ngai.
He was fined VND40 million (US$1,900) for illegally transporting endangered animals.”
The local forest protection agency released the snakes to a local forest and handed over the turtles to Cuc Phuong National Park in Ninh Binh Province, near Hanoi.
