At least six children drowned in two separate accidents in Quang Ninh and Gia Lai provinces on Monday, online newspaper Dan Tri reported.

The first accident happened on Monday morning in Hai Ha District in the northern province of Quang Ninh when three third graders of the Quang Chinh Primary School went to bathe in a river near their house.

Two of them were swept away by strong currents. The third ran home to call for help from adults, but the children were dead by the time residents arrived at the scene.

The names of the three nine-year-old students were not revealed.

The second accident occurred at around 3 p.m. when 10 seventh graders of Le Loi Secondary School in Gia Lai Province's Duc Co District went to a local lake to bathe.

Four 13-year-old female students Nguyen Thi Phuong, Hoang Thi Thanh, Do Thi Phuong and Le Thi Thuy fell into a deep water area in the lake and drowned.

Three male students were also swept away by the waters, but were rescued by Ro Cham Ken, an ethnic minority student in the group who is a good swimmer.

The bodies of three female students were recovered by local residents about an hour later.
