A Singaporean man has been sentenced to four years in jail and 12 strokes of the cane for robbing and injuring a Vietnamese prostitute.

Channel News Asia said Quek Pheng Hock, 49, a fruit seller, pleaded guilty to robbing a cell phone and cash worth nearly US$1,400 from the woman.

He had met the woman, 33, on September 23 at a pub in Geyland, a red-light district, and agreed to pay her $204 for sex.

When they went to a hotel, he told her to wait while he called a friend to fetch money.

When she tried to leave, he took out a knife and threatened her, in the process cutting her in the left hand.

He grabbed her phone and money, and threatened to kill her if she left the room.

Quek, a father of one, asked for lenience, telling the court he had been under the influence of alcohol at the time. But the prosecutor said it was an aggravating factor instead.

The stolen items have not been recovered.
