A provisional police officer was felled by a bullet, on Tuesday, as his team pursued two robbers in Dong Nai Province.
Le Thanh Tam, 25, was shot in his chest as he fought with two men who had attempted to hold up a local resident in broad daylight.
The provisional officer died on the spot. He had been studying at a police college to become a sergeant. He has been posthumously promoted to the position of Lieutenant.
Police say the chase began after two crooks fired a shot at their victim, in broad daylight, but did not hit him.
One of the perpetrators, Tran Quoc Tuan, 25, was shot dead after the police opened fire on him.
The officers say that, even after being shot in the legs, Tuan continued to fire at the team of five pursuing officers.
His partner, Bui Van Trung, 25, hid in a nearby storm drain, only to surrender after a three-hour standoff.
Police suspected that the robbers belonged to a gang who earlier this month had shot a worker to dead to rob his motorbike.
Further investigations have been launched.
