The Ha Tinh police Monday recommended criminal charges against the province's second top transport official and three other officials for gambling.

They caught Nguyen Tran, 58, deputy director of the Department of Transport, Tran Nam Long, 45, of the department's planning office, Tran Phi Duoc, 58, director of the state-owned Ha Tinh Construction and Traffic Work Management JSC, and Nguyen Van Su, 47, his subordinate, playing card games for money at Duoc's office on July 19.

They seized more than VND4 million (US$192) from the table.

Gambling is illegal in Vietnam.

The province Party unit suspended Tran as the secretary of the department unit since members are prohibited from gambling.

Su and Long have also been suspended as members.
