Police in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai have detained a senior forest ranger for letting nearly 5,500 hectares of forest be destroyed over the last seven years.
Tran Dinh Nguyen, former chief manager of the Ayunpa protected forest, will be held for four months during investigations into his violations of forest management rules.
Investigators said 4,000 hectares of forest had been lost under Nguyen's jurisdiction for unknown reasons. Another 1,500 hectares of forest disappeared after he illegally allocated them to local residents for management.
In a related story, the Ministry of Public Security has detained Huynh Tan Toan, director of a forestry company in the nearby Kon Tum Province, for investigations into embezzlement charges.
Investigators said the company is on the verge of bankruptcy due to embezzlement.
