Schoolgirls crash motorbike into police, five injured

Three schoolgirls on a motorbike crashed into a police patrol motorbike, seriously injuring themselves and two traffic police officers on a road in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on Thursday.

Nguyen Thi My Linh, Le Thi Hong Phuong and Nguyen Huynh Kim Ngan, all 14 years old, were on the bike and not wearing helmets on a road in Tan Thanh District when they crashed into a police bike traveling in the opposite direction.

The police bike was driven by Sergeant-Major Nguyen Thanh Trung, 24, with Sergeant-Major Nguyen Hoang Hao, 25, riding on the back seat.

All the five people were seriously injured; Trung's and Ngan's legs were broken.

According to police, the motorbike with the three girls all ninth graders at Hac Dich Secondary School was speeding and encroaching into the wrong lane at the time of the accident.

Police did not clarify who among the three drove the bike.

Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
