Police in the northern province of Ha Giang have put four school girls under criminal investigation after they posted a video of them brutally attacking another girl involved in a love triangle online.

Chau Thi Thanh, a 12th grader who suspected that her boyfriend had cheated on her with a tenth grader from the same school, allegedly asked three other friends -- Chau Thi Tham, Chau Thi Linh, and Then Thi Le, all 17 -- to join her in a revenge beating, news website VnExpress reported.

They viciously attacked the girl, known only as Thu, at her small room for rent on September 10. They beat her, ripped off her clothes and warned her not to see the boy, also a classmate, anymore. One member of the gang of hoodlums recorded the attack on a cell phone video camera and it was then posted online.

Authorities said the violent gang threatened Thu with an even more brutal beating if she continued her relationship with the boy. The girls were put under investigation by local authorities in Vietnam's northernmost province on Thursday.

Police said the attackers could be charged with "humiliating" Thu. The crime is punishable with up to two years of probation, or between three months and two years in jail, according to Vietnam's Penal Code.
