Two people were killed by a sand whirlwind at the Cua Lo Beach in the central province of Nghe An Sunday morning, local news website Vnexpress reported.

The victims were tourists from Hanoi playing handball on the beach. A sudden whirlwind pulled some of them into the water.

Nguyen Trong Chung, 59, a runner, managed to pull two of the people out, but when he tried to save Le Viet Anh, 28, both of them drowned.

Cua Lo rescuers moved others to safety and found the bodies of Chung and Viet around one kilometer from where the whirlwind spot.

These are the first deaths by sand-whirlwind reported at the beach. Cua Lo attracts thousands of people from neighboring areas and Hanoi every weekend.
