A shop in Ho Chi Minh City has released a video and accused a foreign couple of stealing money from its cash register.
Van Cong Nhat, owner of children’s toy shop Baby Plaza on Pham Van Hai Street, Tan Binh District, said a man and a woman of around 40 years old came in last Friday afternoon.
They showed a VND500,000 note to a staff member, named Huynh The Danh, and said a few English words while pointing at the cashier table inside the store, Nhat told news website Kien Thuc (Knowledge).
Danh guessed that they needed smaller notes and he took the man to the cash register.
The foreign man then stood close while Danh pointed to different notes to ask him if those were what he wanted.
He kept shaking his head and started mixing the notes, Nhat said.
The woman was talking to another staff member, he said.
The couple left and tipped Danh VND50,000 for his help.
But he later found out VND10 million (US$460) was missing from the shop’s money box.
He said the camera footage showed the foreign man quickly putting something into his pocket.
Danh said that must have happened when he was distracted.
“He spoke English, so I did not understand a lot of it,” he said.
Nhat said he has informed police and other shops nearby. Police have not made any comment.
It may be difficult to verify his claim because the video does not show clearly what the foreigner put into his pocket.
