Police in the popular tourist town of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province are searching for a Russian tourist who allegedly slashed his friend's neck with a broken bottle early Thursday morning.
The friend, identified only as Evgeni, succumbed to his injuries at 11.50 a.m. Saturday at the Khanh Hoa General Hospital, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported the same day.
His body is kept in the hospital's morgue pending repatriation decisions by the Russian embassy in Vietnam as well as relevant Vietnamese authorities.
Provincial police have asked border administrations not to allow Evgeni's friend and alleged killer, identified only as Alexander, to leave the country.
A Tuoi Tre report cited some Russian tourists who witnessed the fight as saying they'd met Alexander and Evgeni at the Sailing Club bar Wednesday evening and accompanied them to a beach nearby to continue drinking.
At around 2 a.m., Alexander and Evgeni began to quarrel and fight over some previous conflict when the former slashed his friend in the neck with a broken bottle, rupturing the carted artery.
Some of the tourists tried to separate them, and ended up with slight injuries on their arms and legs.
Evgeni was rushed to the Khanh Hoa General Hospital while Alexander checked out of the room they had rented at Sheraton Hotel.
The police do not say if Alexander has left the country.
Nha Trang is a popular destination for Russian tourists, with lots of signboards in Russian and tour guides, drivers, and local residents speaking the language
