The Ho Chi Minh City police seized around 3,000 kilograms of rotten chicken meat from a bus last Sunday.

A traffic police squad and officials at the Thu Duc Animal Quarantine Station checked a bus belonging to the Xuan Trang Bus Transport Company at a checkpoint and found 2,904 kilograms of chicken meat and 36 kilograms of chicken viscera inside.

The driver, Le Huy Cuong, could not produce papers to prove the origin of the consignment or a quarantine certificate for it.

The meat was rotten and smelt rancid, and the officers destroyed it.

Cuong told police he was hired to transport the meat from Dong Nai Province near HCMC to the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap by Nguyen Thi Kim Anh, a Dong Nai trader.

Dang Thi Tuyet, chief of the Thu Duc station, said it was the largest batch of rotten meat ever seized.

With more outbreaks of the H5N1 bird flu being reported, the transportation of chicken meat of unclear origin from the southeastern region to the Mekong Delta could help spread the H5N1 virus, Tuyet feared.
