Police in the north-central province of Nghe An are investigating a case in which two men on a motorbike were killed Tuesday in a collision with a Rolls-Royce, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported Thursday.

Senior lieutenant-colonel Le Khac Thuyet, head of Nam Dan District's police division, said that Tran Xuan Thach, the car's driver and owner, informed police of the accident.

Initial information is that the car and the bike were moving in the same direction, from Nam Dan to Thanh Chuong districts, when the bike suddenly entered the car's lane, Thuyet was quoted as saying.

A collision happened and the car did not stop until it had pushed the bike along with the two men for 20 meters, he said.

The victims, identified by Lao Dong (Labor) newspaper as Tran Viet Cuong, 28, and Dinh Van Hiep, 30, died instantly. Cuong was the driver.

According to witnesses and involved people namely Thach and two women who were in the car at that time the car was traveling five to seven meters from the bike before the accident happened.

The motorbike driver was not holding onto the handlebars when the man riding pillion abruptly moved his head, which caused the driver to lose control of the bike, Thuyet told Tuoi Tre.

Thach's car is now in police's custody for investigation, Thuyet said. "We will clarify the accident's cause, and will press charges if the driver is found to have violated any rules."

In the meantime, Thach and his family met with the victims' families and helped them to organize funerals.

Thach, who owns a lumber company in Nghe An's neighboring Ha Tinh Province, bought the Rolls-Royce Phantom for nearly VND40 billion (US$1.89 million) in May last year, according to Lao Dong.

In Vietnam there are now four special Rolls-Royce models that were produced specifically for Year of the Dragon 2012, the newspaper reported. Thach was the fourth person in Vietnam to purchase the luxury car.

In an interview with the press, Thach expressed pity that he had not been one of the first three owners of the car.

There are only 33 Year of the Dragon model Rolls-Royces worldwide.
