The Ho Chi Minh City police have tracked down a gang of robbers who allegedly almost severed a man's arm to grab his cell phone on December 15, Vietnamnet reported Tuesday.

Bui Nhu Dao, 21, said he was sitting in front of his home-workplace in District 8 at around 8 p.m., talking to his wife on the phone, when two men walked towards him.

One of them suddenly pulled out a 50-centimeter-long machete and viciously slashed at his left forearm, causing his Chinese-made fake iPhone to drop.

The men picked up the phone, worth VND600,000 (US$70), and fled.

Dao's arm was 60 percent severed when he was taken to hospital, according to online newspaper Vietnamnet.

Doctors successfully reattached his arm but he has a long period of treatment ahead.

Dao told VTC News that he saw the two men and another associate standing far away with two motorbikes.

"Maybe they had been watching me."

Dao, who married last year, is from the north-central province of Thanh Hoa, and has been working for the last seven years in the granite industry.
