The 15-year-old came to work as a waitress but was forced into prostitution.
Police in Ca Mau Province in southern Vietnam have arrested a 56-year-old man for allegedly paying to have sex with a 15-year-old girl and a woman for brokering the service.
The arrests were made after the girl's family reported that the woman, named Pham Thi Chau, had kept their daughter against her will and forced her to have sex at least twice with the man.
Initial investigation found the girl came to work as a waitress at Chau’s restaurant last month.
But she forced her to do sex work and collect all the money.
Chau, 39, claimed that the girl owed her VND7 million and needed to work to pay off the debt.
Police arrested the client Vietnamese-American Tieu Van Luan on Tuesday night and he has admitted to paying VND500,000 (US$23) twice to have sex with the teenager in May and early June at a local guest house.
Luan owns the biggest hotel in the province.
It’s not clear who else are in the client list.
Sex work is illegal in Vietnam, and paying to have sex with a person between 13 and 16 years old is punishable by up to 15 years in jail, according to Vietnam’s Penal Codes.
Brokering sex with those between 13 and 16 may also lead to a jail term of 15 years.
