Police are investigating a case in which a reporter of a northern Vietnam-based newspaper was threatened with death after some of his stories about local authorities encroaching on public land were published recently.

Dang Trong Duc, reporter of the "Doi thoai" (Interaction) column of Lao Dong Nghe An newspaper said a strange man called him on his cell phone on April 9, saying that he would "kill" Duc or "cut off" his hand, news website Vietnamnet reported Tuesday.

The man clearly explained that the reason for the threat was that Duc had written a series of stories about the encroachment of public land in Nghe An Province's Vinh City, the reporter said.

He added that the unknown man also recounted some cases in which some reporters around Nghe An had already been assaulted.

The Nghe An's People Committee has been investigating the encroachment of land following Duc's stories.
